Avoidance of Eye Contact or Poor Eye Contact
Avoidance of eye contact is one of the cardinal signs of autism. Doctor consider this symptom as their screening and diagnostic tool. Children with autism spectrum disorder often find it hard to look others straight in the eyes. Research has reported that these children find eye contact taxing and extremely uncomfortable. According to the research, children with autism don’t actively evade eye contact with another person. It is due to the fact that they are unaware of social information in the eyes. Extensive research has revealed that abnormalities in brain’s subcortical system contributes to development of this symptom. Research suggests that subcortical systemin autistic children is hypersensitive to effects provoked by direct eye contact.
