These types of hidden melanomas are called mucosal melanomas. They develop in the mucous membrane that covers the body parts such as the nose, mouth, urinary tract, anus, and vagina. These melanomas are especially difficult to diagnose because they are usually be mistaken for other more common conditions.
Depending on the location, mucosal melanomas can also cause bleeding and local pain. If grown in size, they may also put pressure on the adjacent tissues and organs can impair their function.
