Itchiness on large swaths of your skin
You may never think of involvement of the ducts (small tubes) that bring an essential digestive fluid called bile from your liver to gallbladder and small intestine. But sometimes, these ducts are obstructed and scarred by inflammation in what is known as primary sclerosing cholangitis. Although the underlying cause is not fully understood, this decreased flow of bile can lead to severe itching in your body.
According to the Mayo Clinic, a majority of patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis also have an inflammatory bowel disease. The cause is complicated and mysterious; that why these both conditions develop side by side. But, if your doctor finds you have primary sclerosing cholangitis, they will see if you have an inflammatory bowel disease as well, particularly if you have any of the other symptoms related to the condition.
