Foods to enjoy
When you experience an ulcerative colitis flare-up, your diet may be limited, but it doesn’t have to be boring. Instead of avoiding multiple foods, focus on the foods you can eat and enjoy. There are certain groups of foods and beverages that are highly nutritious, can provide all essential nutrients and help maintain your body weight. The foods you can consume (unless you have an allergy or intolerance identified with any of the following foods) include:
- White pasta, noodles, and macaroni
- White bread without seeds
- White rice
- Canned, cooked fruits without skins or seeds
- Cooked vegetables without skins or seeds
- Oils like olive oil and coconut oil
- Cereals and crackers made with white flour
- Pureed vegetable soups
- Peanut butter and other nut butter
- Tender, soft meats (no gristle or skin), and fish
Remember that what you eat plays a vital role in your overall health. Use this article as a guide to help you recover from acute symptoms of ulcerative colitis as vomiting, frequency, or surgery and prevent future flare-ups. Once acute symptoms have subsided, you can gradually reintroduce high-fiber foods to enhance your chances of recovery and reduce symptoms from recurring, as fiber supports the health of your colon/gut tissue and your gut bacteria. It’s a best idea to consult your doctor before doing experiments with diet plans.
