What You Need To Know about Elbow Pain

Elbow pain is not the most common type of articulation pain. However, it is widespread in some athletes and older adults with degenerative diseases. Overuse injuries are usually the cause in athletes, especially in sports where they must perform repetitive wrist motions or elbow flexion and extension.

When the elbow hurts, it is usually due to inflammation. In this area, we have two bony eminences with a little curve forward known as epicondyle. This structure is located at each side of the humerus, the long bone of the upper arm. Epicondylitis, or inflammation of the epicondyle, is the most common cause of elbow pain. Since inflammation causes swelling and changes in structures, nerves are sometimes affected when they go through this area. So, patients often experience nerve entrapment symptoms, too.

As noted, elbow pain can be a complex problem that does not only affect bones and joints. That’s why we decided to write a complete series of articles about this health problem. In this introductory article, you will find a thorough review of the fundamental aspects of elbow pain. We will describe the anatomy of the elbow, the signs and symptoms that usually accompany elbow pain, the incidence of these symptoms, and what usually happens to these patients.
