Cauda Equina Syndrome
Cauda equina is a bundle of nerve fibers in the lower part of the spinal cord. A Cauda quina syndrome is one of the rarest body conditions that develop due to compression of the spinal nerve fibers.
It typically results from a herniated or bulged disc, but other primary causes also include spinal fractures and stenosis, infections, and bone or nerve tumors that affect the spine. It can sometimes also develop as a complication of any surgical intervention to the cauda equina. Common symptoms of cauda equina syndrome include:
- Moderate to severe lower back pain
- Difficulty walking
- Bladder and bowel problems
- Numbness, loss of sensation, and weakness in one or both legs
