The doctor asks the patient to lie on his back and raise one leg as much high as he can and as straight as it is easy for the patient. If the person feels low back pain when he lifts his leg then the doctor diagnoses the patient with herniated disc. Typically the doctor is able to rule out back pain causes from looking at the medical history and there is no need of further testing. However, in some cases there might be chances of some neurological disabilities which lead to low back pain and needs further testing.
