Amyloidosis (Overview, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Causes, Treatment)

Biopsy

The doctors use tissue samples from various body parts to complete the biopsy. A tissue sample from abdominal fat tissues, mouth, rectum, and any other organ is useful for biopsy. The biopsy does not require the sample tissues from the damaged body part as the amyloid deposition is visible in tissues from every body part or organ. 24- hour urine collection and urine protein electrophoresis are also good indicators for the amyloid protein deposition.

The abnormal amyloid protein build-up causes the production of rigid insoluble fibrils that result in higher oxidative stress in surrounding tissues. The pathologist has to use specific antibodies serum with the patient’s serum sample to separate the fibrils for observing them. Electron microscopy and mass spectrophotometry are also used to identify the extent of amyloid build-up in the patient.
