Gastrointestinal symptoms are more commonly linked with food related allergies, and may become much worse in anaphylaxis. Prevalence of GI symptoms of anaphylaxis is about 45%.

  • Discomfort: may be the initial or warning sign along with other signs and symptoms.
  • Abdominal cramps: the patient may be seen doubling with pain.
  • Bloating
  • Diarrhea

All gastrointestinal symptoms are manifestations of gastrointestinal smooth muscle contraction, stimulated under the effect of the mediators. Forceful contractions give rise to pain. It may also result in diarrhea, which is marked by incomplete absorption of food, and enhanced mobility of it within the digestive tract, which explains the increased frequency and fluidity of stools related to it.
