The hygiene hypothesis
This hypothesis gives a possible explanation behind the rise of various allergies in the developing countries. Allergy is a form of hyperactive defense mechanism. The reason behind this hyperactivity is proposed to be decreased exposure to the germ population in the developed countries. The immune system does not get habituated to deal with normal germs in a controlled way, it rather shows a frenzied response, when it undergoes an exposure.
