Anemia : Overview, Symptoms, Causes, Types, and Dietary Guidelines

Hemolytic Anemia

Hemolytic anemia is a type of anemia that involves the destruction of red blood cells in the bloodstream. This disease is mostly inherited, and many other disorders can also contribute to the development of hemolytic anemia. In this condition, the body cannot replace the loss of RBCs at the rate they are destroyed by the body – resulting in the lack of red blood cells in the circulating fluid. Due to which blood cannot transport adequate oxygen to all parts of the body. There are several types of hemolytic anemia that include:

  • Autoimmune hemolytic anemia
  • Drug-induced hemolytic anemia
  • Hereditary hemolytic anemia
  • Acquired hemolytic anemia

People of any age, sex, and race can develop this disease. Symptoms include jaundice, ulcers, pain in the abdomen, and legs. Treatment options for this disease are bone marrow transplant, blood transfusion, surgery, and medications.
