Fanconi Anemia

This type of anemia is inherited and a rare disorder of bone marrow failure. In this disease, the bone marrow cannot produce red blood cells and produce damaged or abnormal cells that cannot perform their function in the body. The patients of Fanconi anemia have an average life span of 20 to 30 years. Fanconi anemia is a genetic disorder and passed from parents to their children. Eating disorders, born with congenital disabilities, bone marrow failure are some of the common signs of Fanconi anemia. Treatment involves stem cell transplant, gene therapy, growth factors, and hormonal therapy.

Both men and women can develop this disease, but having a family history of anemia can significantly increase the chances of having Fanconi anemia.
