Anxiety is multifactorial in origin. There can be variable triggers for anxiety in different people. What some may cope with easily, may come as a serious emotional challenge for others. Anxiety can be a by-product of other underlying conditions, or it may simply become a lifestyle for many people. It is a result of habituation of behavior in response to triggers.  However, the multitude of causative factors is listed below. [4]

Genetics

Anxiety is just as real as any other physical illness. Modern science has identified genes which are seen to be responsible in altering the brain circuits in a way which triggers anxiety. Most common gene found to be commonly altered in anxiety patients is the one responsible for serotonin transporters. These transporters are essential to maintain concentration of neurochemicals in balance across various neuronal membranes. A defect in the transporter causes imbalance of neurotransmitters, which, in turn, can disturb normal stress coping mechanisms. How far genetics can influence anxiety is still under study. Till now, there has not been discovered a specific pattern in which these genes appear, or be inherited.
