Swelling of ankles and feet

Swelling of ankles and feet

In the case of atrial fibrillation, there is a buildup of fluid in the lungs via the pulmonary veins. The poor blood circulation due to irregular heartbeats often causes the swelling of the lower extremities. The weight gain resulting due to the fluid buildup in the feet and ankles is a clear indication of the heart to pump the blood adequately. Sometimes there is swelling of the lower legs, which is medically known as edema. The backing up of fluid in the veins results in the buildup of body tissues, which are a leading cause of swollen ankles in atrial fibrillation patients.
