The Types Of Brain Tumors
There are several types of brain tumors, that are classified on the basis of location, structure, and stage. [5]
-
- Primary Brain Tumors:
An abnormal growth of cells in the brain, or any nearby site is called primary brain tumors. The most common sites where a primary brain tumor can occur is the brain, meninges, which protect the brain, spinal cord, and vessels which supply blood to the brain. A primary tumor may or may not be cancerous, but the problem arises when it starts pressurizing the other parts of nerves and surrounding tissue. Complete recovery from any primary benign tumor is possible.
-
- Secondary brain tumors:
When cancer in any other part of body migrates to the brain it is called secondary brain tumors. These tumors are more common than primary tumors. These cancer cells travel from other parts of the body through the blood. The most common sites involved are the cerebral hemisphere and cerebellum. Treatment of secondary brain tumors is very difficult and most of the times there isn’t a full recovery. The most common cancers that can spread to the brain are lung, breast and liver cancer etc.
