Top Causes, Risk Factors Of Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is now one of the most common types of cancers in the UK (the most common is skin cancer of a non-melanoma nature). It is the most common cancer among women. By far, 1 in 8 females and 1 in 870 males in the UK experience breast cancer during their lives.

Anything that increases or contributes to the risk of becoming sick is referred to as a risk factor. Having one or more of the risk factors does not mean you are sure to get a disease, e.g., breast cancer. Some people who have these factors never get it and some people develop body conditions with no risk factors.

Following are the most common causes and risk factors for breast cancer.

Overweight and Obese

Upon menopause, women who are overweight have a greater risk of breast cancer than women who have optimal weight. Men are also at increased risk of breast cancer if they are overweight or obese.

To be overweight means to have a body mass index (BMI) of 25 to 30. Obesity means that you are very overweight with a body mass index of 30 or greater. Studies have shown that keeping your weight stable through being physically active and eating a healthy, balanced diet can significantly decrease your risk of developing many body conditions.
