A hematoma can also result along with a concussion in athletes or boxers after a violent blow to the head. A hematoma is a blood clot that accumulates inside or surrounding the brain. If active bleeding lingers, hematomas can rapidly get bigger. The increasing pressure due to brain swelling as a result of a concussion can develop severe neurological problems. The increasing pressure causing compression of the brain against the rigid structure of the skull can also lead to life-threatening conditions. Some concussions might require immediate surgical treatments.
