Thrombolytic Agents

Thrombolytic drugs include Alteplase, Tenecteplase, and Streptokinase. These agents break and cause the lysis of clots. In some patients, they show more effectiveness compared to Anticoagulants in treating the DVT. There is a high risk of bleeding with these agents compared to heparin. Thrombolytic drugs should be used only in highly selected patients with DVT. Patients, who may benefit from thrombolytic drugs include, those with age < 60 years with extensive Iliofemoral DVT, history or current Limb Ischemic patients and those with no risk of bleeding.
