Dehydration results in loss of cell turgor, that is, the cells shrink in size and become flaccid. This loss of hydration can further thin the skin underlying the eyes. This causes a visible appearance of the vessels underlying the dermal layers. The skin can also become discolored giving rise to dark circles. The laxity of the skin accentuates bony prominences and gives a sunken appearance to the eyes in the sockets.
