Diarrhea can lead to serious complications such as dehydration and malabsorption. Their symptoms occur in young children, infants, toddlers, adults, and are as follows. (4)

Dehydration

Adults suffering from dehydration may experience the following symptoms:

  • Thirst
  • Decrease in urination
  • Feeling little tired
  • Having dark urine
  • Mouth dry
  • Decrease in skin turgor means that when you pinch and release your skin, it does not immediately revert to normal.
  • Sunken cheeks or eyes
  • Fainting or feeling light-headed

Symptoms of dehydration in young children, infants, and toddlers may include:

  • Thirst
  • Decrease in urination, or no more wet diapers for three hours
  • Energy lack
  • Mouth dry
  • Crying without tears
  • Reduced skin turgor

Malabsorption

Adults suffering from malabsorption may experience the following symptoms:

  • Bloating
  • Appetite changes
  • Gas
  • Greasy, loose, foul-smelling stools
  • Weight loss
