Osteochondritis dissecans is a condition more common among adolescents and children due to a lack of blood supply towards the minute segments of the knee bone. A lack of blood supply affects the bones and weakens the cartilage surrounding the bone. There is on-and-off knee pain, swelling, and stiffness in the knee in this condition. In addition to the weakening of the cartilage surrounding the bone, there is sometimes separation of the cartilage from the bone thus causing significant friction and pain upon movements.
