The anti-seizure medications and antiepileptic medications cause the weakening of connective tissues and lead to a poor supply of blood to the fingers and palm. The prolonged use of these medications causes inflammation of fibroblasts and promotes the development of Dupuytren’s contracture. The drug, which is the main culprit in causing Dupuytren’s contracture is phenobarbital which is an antiepileptic drug. Not all the epileptic drug becomes the cause of this hand deformity condition, but the studies show that certain drugs for prolonged exposure become the cause of Dupuytren’s contracture.
