15 Causes Of Dupuytren’s Contracture
The exact cause of Dupuytren’s contracture is still not known, but most common causes are having a faulty gene, being male, and increasing age. Whatever the exact cause of Dupuytren’s contracture, there is the irregular proliferation of connective tissue cells, i.e., fibroblasts. The fibroblasts start differentiating and cause the development of Dupuytren’s contracture. The connective tissue bands known as fascia start having an excess amount of myofibroblasts due to this condition of Dupuytren’s contracture. Myofibrils typically create the basic unit of muscle fibers and cause the contraction of muscles fibres to happen. The increasing amount of myofibroblasts in the disorder of Dupuytren’s contracture results in the abnormal contractions of the muscles and excess production of the type III collagen protein, which is a connective tissue protein.
The excess production of collagen protein and the abnormal contractions of the fascia adds to the contracture happening in the condition of the Dupuytren’s disease. However, the exact cause is still not known, but the following are the possible causes behind the development and progression of Dupuytren’s contracture in an individual:
Gender
Men are prone to suffer from the condition of Dupuytren’s contracture in comparison with women. The studies on the gender ratio of Dupuytren’s contracture suggest that almost 70% of the male population gets the condition of Dupuytren’s contracture, and only 30% of the females suffer from this condition. Also, the men suffering from Dupuytren’s condition suffer from more severe symptoms of the condition while the women get the disease at earlier phases.
