Head trauma

Trauma to the head may lead to brain injury. The adult population is more prone to traumatic head injury in roadside accidents. Elderly people can also injure themselves as a result of falls. Babies and infants may also sustain head injuries due to falls, child abuse, or being hurt during sports. Such an external force can result in bleeding within the confines of the skull, between the different layers covering the brain, or within the spaces of the brain mass. After a traumatic brain injury, two types of seizures may occur; one immediately afterwards, and the other may be delayed in onset. It is the latter one which is more associated with being diagnosed as epilepsy.

Trauma to the brain can result in lesions, or otherwise disruption of the neural currents which trigger a seizure. When this injury results in a chronic disturbance, the patient may get epilepsy.
