Brain infections

A number of viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic agents can infect brain and cause seizures. These seizures may be a result of toxins released by these pathogens, or due to metabolic imbalance resulting from inflammatory processes initiated to deal with the infection. Acute infection and inflammation may be controlled due to timely intervention. But in cases, where slight infection persists in a dormant phase, it may revoke a stronger damage to the brain tissue. This can cause delayed seizures, which appear unprovoked after the infection has been resolved. It is upon such delayed, unprompted multiple seizures, that epilepsy is diagnosed. Some of the common agents which can cause brain damage, encephalitis and meningitis due to infection are:

  • Herpes simplex virus
  • Cytomegalo virus
  • Toxoplasmosis
  • Cysticercosis
  • Hemophilia influenza
