Diagnosis Of Epilepsy

A proper diagnosis is the first step towards management of any ailment. Diagnosis of epilepsy is a difficult one, as the seizures only occur unexpectedly. It is difficult for the doctor to make a diagnosis upon the mere narration of an event by the patient themselves. Furthermore, there are a number of other conditions which can cause a seizure. Patience, and proper cooperation with the doctor in relating your experience can prove very beneficial in this crucial step. [5]

Proper history of the seizure

As the doctor cannot, in most cases, examine the clinical picture of the seizure, it is essential that all details of the seizure are narrated to the doctor recalled from the best stores of memory. The doctor may be interested in knowing:

  • Whether the seizure was the first of its type to occur, or there has been a personal history of similar events.
  • Whether there is a family history of similar complaint.
  • The time of onset of the seizure.
  • Any prompting or relieving factors.
  • The duration for which it lasted.
  • All details of how the patient and witnesses relate during the seizure, after it or before its onset.
  • The highlights of symptoms that marked the seizure, motor or non-motor responses.

At least a history of two unprompted seizures hints towards epilepsy.
