Detox and withdrawal
Treatment can start with a detox or detoxification program – a withdrawal of alcohol that is managed medically. It usually takes two to seven days. You may need to take medication to avoid symptoms of withdrawal. Detox is usually done in a hospital or rehabilitation treatment center.
In most cases of alcoholism, the detox withdrawal is being used. However, it is not so effective for chronic alcohol abusers. According to a study, a majority of people (who are not chronic alcohol abuser and diagnosed cases of alcoholism) do benefit from detox program. This treatment method may cause withdrawal symptoms that can be successfully managed with medications.
