Surgical correction of the bony spurs and growths can be an effective option for some people; however, most people with ankylosing spondylitis don’t need surgical intervention. Your doctor might recommend spinal surgery if you have joint damage or severe pain that is not relieved by taking medications and doing physical therapy. If your vertebral or hip joint is grossly damaged, it needs to be surgically replaced.
