Ankylosing spondylitis can affect uvea and iris of the eye and cause uveitis and iritis respectively. The first signs of eye inflammation in this condition are usually a watery and painful eye along with red bloodshot. Sometimes, another associated sign is also present called photosensitivity that makes it uncomfortable to look at sunlight and other bright lights. If you experience these signs and symptoms along with back pain and muscle strains, it’s important to get immediate medical help within the first 48 hours. The best place to consult is an ophthalmologist or an eye casualty department. Treatment usually involves steroid eye drops, which are generally safe and very effective. Some people may get repeated attacks of uvea or iris inflammation, but they are extremely unlikely to cause damage if treated promptly with antibiotics and steroids.
