Metatarsalgia occurs when the joints in the ball of the foot (metatarsals) are inflamed. This produces pain, discomfort, and swelling in the ball of your foot. This inflammation can trigger a build-up of fluid that makes the feet and toes feel stiff and swollen, making walking difficult.

Thus, the treatment of metatarsalgia should be focused on reducing inflammation and swelling. Many people find that metatarsalgia goes away on its own over time, and they usually need some rest to relieve their symptoms. However, this can be caused by a more severe foot condition, and it is always best to see a doctor to ensure that this is not the case.

Medical treatment for metatarsalgia includes anti-inflammatory medications like cortisone injections or oral anti-inflammatories, such as ibuprofen. Physical therapy and/or orthotic devices may also be used to relieve the pain and discomfort associated with chronic pain. The use of orthotics is a widespread treatment for metatarsalgia, but they are not always effective. Some patients with metatarsalgia have had great success with a metatarsal pad, similar to an athletic shoe insert. This is often prescribed in combination with other oral treatments or injections to relieve the pain.
