Kidney stones

If you have a severe acute gouty attack or have been living with this condition for a while, you could end up developing kidney stones. It is due to excess uric acid build up in the urinary tract. Development of kidney stones is a troublesome issue that may cause additional symptoms like painful urination, burning micturition, and urinary incontinence.

If you develop kidney stones, you should check your uric acid levels to see if gouty arthritis might be the underlying cause. However, testing uric acid levels in the blood is not sufficient to diagnose gout. To confirm the diagnosis, your doctor will remove synovial fluid from an affected joint and examine it under a microscope. If it’s gout, tophi of urate crystals will be visible.
