Xanthine oxidase inhibitors
Xanthine oxidase inhibitors minimize the amount of uric acid the body is producing. However, xanthine oxidase inhibitors can stimulate an acute gout attack when a person starts taking these drugs. These drugs can also worsen an acute gout attack if a person takes them during the gout attack. People having gout often get a short course of colchicine along with the initiation of xanthine oxidase inhibitor. Some side effects of xanthine oxidase inhibitors include nausea and rash. There are two major xanthine oxidase inhibitors in practice for gout:
- Febuxostat
- Allopurino
- Probenecid
Probenecid is a medicine that helps the kidneys to remove uric acid from blood more efficiently. Some side effects include upset stomach, kidney stones, and rash.
