Motility Disorders

Motility disorders are related mostly to the disturbed nerve or muscle function in the stomachs of the people suffering. In a healthy person, the stomach moves the digested food towards the small intestine for further digestion and excretion. However, in a person affected by motility disorder, there is a delay in stomach emptying. This delay 2might be due to two reasons. The first reason is the abnormality of the stomach muscles to contract to move the food further. The second reason is the problem in the nerve impulse or hormones that signal those muscle contractions i-e, peristalsis. The delay in stomach emptying increases pressure in the stomach and food in the stomach causes increased production of acids. These acids backflow into the esophagus via the lower esophageal sphincter causing heartburn.
