There are various risk factors that can increase your chances of developing both primary and secondary hypertension. These include;
- Hardening of the blood vessels due to advancing age (atherosclerosis)
- Ethnicity – High risk in African-Americans
- The non-judicious use of alcohol, tobacco, and certain drugs
- Being overweight or obese
- Gender – Men are more prone to develop hypertension
- Reduced range of physical activity
- Diet rich in salts and bad cholesterol
- A positive family history of high blood pressure
- Stress and anxiety
- Existing health conditions
