Hip fracture is the most common type of fragility fracture in the elderly—the incidence rate increases with age. More than 1 million cases occur annually. About two-thirds of hip fractures result from falls, including slipping on ice and snow or during high energy impact, such as motor vehicle crashes.

Hip fractures are more common in women because they are more likely to have osteoporosis, and the outcome can be reserved in patients with poor health or several baseline health conditions. However, many patients regain independence and mobility after recovering from a hip fracture.
