Periungal Warts

Periungal warts

These warts appear in and around the finger or toe nails. Most commonly the nails get infected during scratching of the warts elsewhere on the body. This process of infection and reinfection by the activity of the patients themselves, is called autoinfection.

These warts appear in clusters and result in thickening of the entire fold of skin under the nails. The warts around the nails can seriously damage the cuticle layer on nails and cause nail deformities, and even nail loss. It can also lead to other infections of the skin around the toenails, or paronychia.
