Intercourse With an Infected Person
The STI primarily spread by this route. The type of the intercourse and intimate interaction will determine the sites for infection. Oral, anal or vaginal sex can then infect either the oral cavity, anal region, vagina or cervix respectively. About 80% of all sexually active men and women get infected with HPV at some point in their lives.
There are 20% chances that sex with an infected person can transmit infection within a latent period of six months. Even if the infected person is asymptomatic, the infection can be transmitted. However, it is noteworthy to mention that condom use does decrease the rates of transmission, but is not 100% effective. Any infected part that is uncovered can transmit infection, condom use therefore, is not a guaranteed protective strategy.
As HPV spreads via contact through the skin, it does not depend on the context of penetrative sex.
