Commonly used in suspected cases of cancer of the cervix, this method can be used for diagnosis or treatment. It involves excising a cone shaped mass from the cervix where the abnormal cell growth is seen. The excised part is then inspected for the cancerous or precancerous origin. The procedure can be carried out by a traditional ‘cold knife’, however, a new instrument for the procedure, loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) is now more commonly used.

Apart from these, specific chemotherapy and radiation are used in advanced stages of cancer.
