Scintigraphy is one of the diagnostic methods for knee problems, which comes from the nuclear medicine. The patient takes radioisotopes orally and the gamma cameras or external detectors capture the radiations emitting from radioisotopes. The external detectors produce a two dimensional image of the isotopes. The bones prefer the uptake of radioisotopes such as technetium-99m-MDP and we can increase the precision by doing an indium 111-labeled test of white blood cells along with the use of Technetium-99m-MDP isotope.

With the use of radioisotopes, we can diagnose conditions which result in causing inflammation or bone turnover. Bone scanning can be helpful to assess fractures during the 24 hours of the fracture. There is increased vascularity in initial stages, but delayed scans might show more uptakes for up to 6 months after the injury. However, the bone scanning might not be able to detect the fractures at knee joint due to stress. [1]
