Peritoneal mesothelioma (abdomen)

Peritoneal mesothelioma (abdomen)

Peritoneal mesothelioma accounts for almost 10% to 20% of mesothelioma patients all over the globe. The prognosis for this type of mesothelioma is better than the pleural mesothelioma, while there is less research available on this type of tumor cells. According to some studies, almost half of the peritoneal mesothelioma patients who attain the treatment of heated chemotherapy (HIPEC) and surgery live for five or more years after the diagnosis of cancer. The tumor cells lodge in the lining of the abdomen known as the peritoneum and affect the mesothelium. The most commonly occurring symptoms of this type of mesothelioma include bowel changes, abdominal pain, abdominal swelling, loss of appetite, and bloating. The prognosis for this type of mesothelioma shows that almost 52% of the patients who receive surgery with HIPEC live for more than five years.
