Myotonic dystrophy

Myotonic dystrophy

This is another type of muscular dystrophy that involves muscle weakness and muscle wasting. The smaller muscles are normally affected first, including the face, neck, and jaw muscles. This type can appear at any time after birth and affects both men and women equally. The symptoms include stiffening of muscles, excessive sleeping, having difficulty in swallowing, and chewing. The person suffering from this type can have irregular heart, and behavioral problems have also been observed. This type can get worse very slowly, but the condition is passed to other generations. Some people can have heart abnormalities due to the risk of electrical impulse that controls the heartbeat traveling slowly through the heart; therefore, proper monitoring is required. But no significant disability has been noticed in patients. These types of Myotonic dystrophy c have a different life expectancy. Some people live a normal life, while some can have a severe congenital form, causing death soon after birth or after a few years. The cause of death in this type can be breathing and heart problems.
