Oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy

In this type of muscular dystrophy, the symptoms do not appear until a person reaches 50. This type affects the muscle in the eyes and throat. The symptoms include droopy eyelids, restriction in eye movement due to weakness in the eye’s muscles. The person can feel limb weakness around shoulders and hips. He may find it difficult to swallow food also. The chances of double vision also increase because the dropping of eyelids can cover the eyes and impair vision. Dysphagia, a condition that makes it difficult for the person to swallow solid food, and liquid can develop in this type. The person cannot eat and drink. Even a small amount of saliva becomes impossible to pass. A chest infection can arise if the food is accidentally swallowed in the wrong way in the lungs.
