Causes of Myasthenia Gravis

Being a neuromuscular and autoimmune disorder, MG can be caused by several causes. [4] These may include;

  • Antibodies

Antibodies are proteins present in the immune system, any fault in the immune system leads to the production of these antibodies against the receptors for acetylcholine. Antibodies producing in response to the acetylcholine receptors alter, destroy, and block the activity of these receptors thus preventing the muscles to contract. Moreover, muscle specific kinase protein (MUSK) protein antibodies are also responsible for impairing the nerve transmission at the neuromuscular junction.
