Prognosis of Ocular Migraine
The prognosis is an important procedure after the patient has been diagnosed with ocular migraine. The doctor checks the history of the patient, current conditions and symptoms the patient has been experiencing. The purpose of the prognosis is to check whether the patient’s medical condition will improve or decline in the future. (6)
Age
Typically, ocular migraine is most common in people aging from 30-40 years of age. Teenagers having classical migraine are at a higher rate to develop an ocular migraine. Even though the chances of classical migraine will decrease in the future, the ocular migraine increases with age. The aura also becomes intense and severe over time.
Stress
Ocular migraine resulting from high stress levels can be avoided by maintaining a healthy lifestyle and surrounding yourself with good company. If a person is experiencing high stress levels despite behavior therapy, the best thing is to take an antidepressant and rest your eyes. Indulging your brain in healthy activities can maintain stress levels and improve the prognosis.
Avoiding triggers
Living with ocular migraine can be difficult as any slightest movement can trigger ocular migraine. The patient should avoid as many triggers as possible. Maintaining a proper diet, avoiding visits to places with loud music and bright light can decrease the frequency of migraine and improve the symptoms over time.
Alcohol consumption
Alcohol is one of the prime risk factors of ocular migraine and unlike other risk factors such as age and family history, an ocular migraine patient can control alcohol consumption in order to improve the prognosis. Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to permanent vision loss. Red wine has the highest rate of triggering ocular migraine.
Dehydration
Excessive water loss from the body can result in ocular migraine. Drinking enough water can improve general health of the patient as well as ocular migraine. Enough amount of water, especially in the summer season can maintain the electrolyte balance in the body, improving the ocular migraine prognosis.
Genetics
Family history and genetics are a major cause of ocular migraine. Although there are uncontrolled factors leading to ocular migraine, continuous checkup and following doctors’ instructions can prove useful in order to achieve a positive prognosis.
Underlying Conditions
Ocular migraine caused due to underlying conditions does not have a very good prognosis. The doctor must treat the underlying condition prior to treating ocular migraine. However, maintaining good health and taking good care of the underlying condition can prove very helpful in controlling the symptoms from acquiring a worse state.
Diet
Avoiding food and drinks that can trigger migraine is essential in order to improve the prognosis. Avoid foods such as chocolate, caffeine, pickles and artificial sweeteners, the most common cause of ocular migraine. Consuming a diet rich with healthy nutrients can prove beneficial for avoiding ocular migraine.
Maintaining Good health
Maintaining good health does not only mean eating 3 times a day. It means eating a healthy diet rich in minerals and antitoxins along with healthy exercise and activities. Sleeping on time, reducing screen time, avoiding alcohol and smoking can improve the prognosis.
