Losing of muscle mass
Our muscles are the largest depositors of protein throughout the body. When dietary protein runs short, the body tends to draw protein from the skeletal muscles to protect the integrity of important tissues and bodily functions. Therefore, the lack of protein results in muscle wasting with passing time. In fact moderate deficiency of protein in body might lead to muscle wasting, specifically in elderly people. According to a study, the muscle wasting is higher in elderly men and women who are consuming lower portions of protein. Other studies also confirm that an increase in protein intake might slow down the degeneration of muscle mass that occurs due to old age.
