Stroke
According to the recent estimate, ten percent of children with sickle cell anemia can develop symptoms of a stroke that occurs when a blood vessel in the brain becomes blocked. Moreover, the other twenty percent are found to have clinically silent strokes.
Stroke can result in permanent disability and learning problems. Doctors are now capable of identifying the children at an increased risk of having an asymptomatic stroke with special ultrasound exams.
