Stroke
A stroke is considered as one of the most serious complications of sickle cell anemia. The condition happens when the sickle cells block the blood flow of oxygen to the child’s brain.
However, the main stroke symptoms are remembered with the word FAST like Face, Arms, Speech, Time.
- Face – The face drops on one side. In this condition, the person cannot smile, and their mouth and eye may also have drooped.
- Arms – The person with a suspected stroke is unable to lift one or both arms. The condition keeps them there due to arm weakness and numbness.
- Speech – Speech may also be slurred and garbled. The person is not capable of talking at all despite appearing awake.
- Time – There is a great need to dial for an ambulance if you feel any of these signs and symptoms
Children with sickle cell anemia also experience a transient is a chemical attack (TIA). A TIA occurs in the body when the blood supply to the brain is temporarily interrupted. However, the most common symptoms of a TIA are similar to those of a stroke. If you feel this condition, contact your doctor, local hospital, and out-of-hours service immediately.
Blood transfusions can also treat strokes. However, the treatment is not effective for treating strokes in people who do not have sickle cell anemia. The causes are different, like a blood clot or a burst artery.
