Sickle Cell Anemia (Overview , Symptoms , Causes , Risk Factors , Complications , Diagnosis , Home Remedies , Treatment and Prevention)

Laboratory Tests

Sickle cell anemia is suggested by the clinical picture of chronic hemolytic anemia or vaso-occlusive Crisis. Furthermore, electrophoresis also confirms the diagnosis with homozygous HbS, and it can also document other hemoglobinopathies. However, several laboratory tests are used in patients with sickle cell anemia such as:

  • Mandatory screening for HbS at birth via chorionic villus sampling
  • Blood cultures
  • Hemoglobin solubility testing
  • ABGs
  • CBC count with reticulocyte count
  • Serum electrolytes
  • Hepatobiliary function tests
  • Peripheral blood smear
  • Pulmonary function tests
  • Renal function
  • CSF examination
  • Secretory phospholipase A2
