Stem cell transplant
A stem cell transplant is a long hospital procedure that involves replacing bone marrow due to sickle cell anemia with healthy bone marrow. The procedure uses a matched donor, such as a sibling with no sickle cell anemia diseases. A stem cell transplant is a successful treatment to get rid of inherited diseases.
However, the risks are associated with a bone marrow transplant, so the procedure is recommended only for people who have significant symptoms and complications of sickle cell anemia.
Furthermore, the stem cell transplant requires a long hospital stay. After the transplant, the patient receives a variety of drugs to help prevent rejection of the donated stem cells. If the body rejects the transplant, it may lead to life-threatening complications.
