Hand-Foot Syndrome
Swelling in the hands and feet is the very first symptom of sickle cell anemia. The swelling occurs along with a fever that is caused by the sickle cells. These sickle cells stuck in the vessels and block the flow of blood in and out of the hands and feet.
Generally, the swelling involves entire fingers and toes. This condition is also called dactylitis. Dactylitis occurs by an injury to the bones of all the affected digits by repeated inadequate blood circulation. Furthermore, it also occurs in kids with sickle cell anemia from age six months to 8 years.
